ZJOSO, INTERVIEW By Elle Young
"I grew up in a household where my Mum and step dad would play me music all the time”
How did music come to be such an important part of your life?
I was always surrounded by good music, I grew up in a household where my Mum and step dad would play me music all the time from the likes of Erykah Badu to The Streets and Cafe Del Mar compilations.
What are your earliest memories of when music impacted you?
I was a Micheal Jackson fanatic as a child, I would know all his songs and watch his documentaries over and over. His dance moves and music had a strong hold on me.
Your platform Tribqu has become a staple on Skylab radio, and has moved on to host special events. Can you talk to us about how you came up with the name and what the ethos of Tribqu is?
The name Tribqu came about through wanting to create my own tribe of people. The party aims to cultivate a space where music is not led by a specific genre rather a feeling and exploration in sound and movement.
How do you want people to feel when they come to a Tribqu party?
I want people to feel uplifted, inspired, educated, connected, energised and want people to feel like they’ve experienced something new and unique each time they attend the dance.
What do you love most about the Melbourne DJ and music scene?
There’s a lot of talented people doing great things in the scene here. It’s diverse and there’s pretty much a party, label or radio show that covers different types of music.
Think about one of your favourite DJ sets - what are some of the things that happen in the moment to make it feel so good?
My favourite DJ sets are always ones that come from a place of joy and passion. If the DJ is feeling what they are playing at the moment I’m going to feel them too!
If there was an artist that you'd want to share with us that personifies the feeling and ethos of Tribqu, who would that be?
When you need to process a feeling or emotion, what kind of music do you turn to?
It varies, sometimes Neo Soul or Reggae.
Give us your most recent top 5 'liked' Spotify tunes. No cheating! ;)
